Physiotherapy & Osteopathy

Should I see an Osteopath or a Physiotherapist?

Fortunately at The Tonbridge clinic we have both Osteopaths and Physiotherapists.

Patients often ask whether it would be best for them to see a Physiotherapist or an Osteopath and we are often asked what the differences are between the two.

There are now more similarities than differences between Osteopathy and Physiotherapy with both professions using a mixture of manual therapy and exercise in the rehabilitation process albeit with a slightly different approach.

In the past, osteopaths focused more on manipulating stiff or locked joints whilst Physiotherapists focused more on stretching and mobilising the spine.

However as medical knowledge has improved, both are increasingly adopting techniques that research has proven to work such as manipulation, mobilisation and exercises which decrease pain, increase mobility and confidence so reducing the patient’s fear of moving.

So who should I see?

The answer is down to personal preference. The aim of the treatment is the same – to get you better as soon as possible. The clinic is fortunate in having both male and female Osteopaths and Physiotherapists so if you feel more comfortable with one than the other please make your preference known at time of booking.

If either of Physiotherapist or Osteopath thinks that your treatment would be better with a different therapist we are always happy to arrange a referral.
