Gemma Viney – Sports Rehabilitation

Gemma graduated in 2004 from St Mary’s University in Twickenham with a BSc (Hons) Sport Rehabilitation Degree. She is a full member of the British Association of Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT). At University, Gemma gained experience working alongside elite runners and other sporting teams and had the privilege of working with the current sports director and former head Physiotherapist of UK Athletics, Neil Black. After graduating, she started working in the fields of athletics and rugby, working with the South East Women’s Rugby Teams from the u14 to the seniors.

Gemma has a particular interest in athletics and has been a keen runner since the age of eight. She has represented club, county, university, and national regional teams. She is a member of Blackheath and Bromley Harriers Athletic club, where since 2005 has worked closely with their young athletes and junior national teams, travelling with them to competitions and for the past eight years has had the privilege of travelling with their junior girls’ team internationally to the European Club Cup Championships.

Woman Doing FitnessAs a sports injury and rehabilitation specialist, Gemma provides a holistic approach to assessing and treating people recovering from orthopaedic and musculoskeletal disorders or injuries. She has a sound knowledge and understanding of sporting injuries and as an athlete, has the ability to empathise with the annoyance injury brings to the individual. Transferring her knowledge of injury rehabilitation by tailoring a unique individual treatment plan, bringing a safe return back to and allowing continued optimal participation in their chosen activity, whatever their ability, so achieving their personal goals as well as reducing injury risk.

Gemma has also gone on to Study Pilates with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates institute (APPI) and is a Matwork level 2 class instructor. Gemma first assesses you individually so that she can provide the best Pilates plan for the individual’s needs or condition. She then runs clinical Pilates classes on a one to one basis or in groups of 3, so that she can provide individual attention to gain the most benefit from the exercises and reducing the risk of injury from performing the exercise incorrectly. Classes are tailored to the requirements of the individual and their experience with Pilates.

As a Sports rehabilitator, Gemma is qualified in Sports Massage and uses Massage Therapy techniques as a preventative and rehabilitative treatment. The benefits of regular Sports Massage are:
